The Angels
Alien defense platforms ancient beyond reckoning, The Angels automatically defend Bifrost from all threats. For centuries, they also prevented our people from leaving the surface of our world.
It was discovered that our ancestors had originally managed to gain the trust of the Angels via a psionic communcation system when Bifrost was originally settled. After much trial and error, we were able to re-establish tenuous contact. While we cannot command the Angels, as our ancestors did, we were at least able to gain their trust. The Angels now recognize the IFF codes of our fleet's ships and allow them to come and go without harassment, as long as we do not approach within a certain distance of one of the angels themselves.
Armament
It is not known exactly what the Angels use as their primary weapons, if only because we have never been able to approach them. All that we know for sure is that it is some sort of beam weapon. One with an output an order of magnitude higher than anything we are capable of creating currently, and the ability to vary the dispersal from a beam only centimeters across to a width of over a kilometer at impact.
